I have watched the film Training Day countless times. I really like it. It’s not a classic – just a good movie to watch.
But to this day I still do not believe Denzel Washington should have won the Oscar. It’s a totally subjective issue, but in my heart I just do not think it was Oscar-worthy. Again, my opinion. And I am big Denzel fan.
The 2002 Oscars have always been a difficult one for me to deal with. I also think Halle Berry had no business winning. But surely many people think otherwise. Fair enough. But I just don’t see what was so special about her performance.
Between the two acting categories it was a mostly weak line-up. I always found it interesting that A Beautiful Mind can win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay but does not win for Best Actor.
I think Russell Crowe did not win because he had just won the year before with Gladiator.
Perhaps the voting block was resistant to awarding Crowe a second Best Actor in a row. If so, Washington is a solid #2.
His role in Malcom X was deserving of an Oscar. But then Al Pacino misses out on his award for Scent of a Woman, even though he should have won for any number of other films… and on and on it goes.
